On Saturday 11th February we will be performing an evening ceili at a wedding celebration near Liskeard.
FALMOUTH CANOE CLUB CEILI
28th January
Falmouth Canoe Club holds an annual ceili for its members and the public, that also raises money for charity. This year the beneficiary was the local charity ShelterBox. Hevva has been privileged to be asked to play at these events for the last several years, an occasion we always enjoy.
Once more we were lucky to have a set of keen and enthusiastic dancers turn up, which made for a very pleasurable evening.

Events over the past year:-
Falmouth Canoe Club Ceili
Saturday 28th January saw us once more at the Watersports Centre in Falmouth, where we performed a ceili for Falmouth Canoe Club. This is something we have been asked to do for several years now, and we are always pleased to oblige as we know we will get a good crowd of dancers and it will be an enjoyable evening. We were not disappointed!
As last year, profits from the evening went to local charity ShelterBox.

Cornish Dance Society Ceili
The Cornish Dance Society held the latest in its series of ceilis on Saturday 14th January, this time it was Hevva's turn to host it and we did so at Chacewater Village Hall. These events are free and open to all and provide an opportunity not only for CDS members to get together and enjoy themselves, but for anyone else to come along and have a go at some Cornish dancing.
The event was well attended, with quite a few new faces and there were some encouraging enquiries about where they could go to learn some more. All in all a successful evening and an enjoyable first gig of the New Year!

Federation of Old Cornwall Societies Winter Festival
The annual Winter Festival organised by the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies took place this year at Liskeard on Saturday 12th November. Hevva performed two spots in the concert to a packed Public Hall where, despite the best efforts of a very slippery stage to dislodge us, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
For more information on the Federation of old Cornwall Societies, please visit its web site at www.oldcornwall.org
Lowender Peran
Cornwall's annual Celtic festival, Lowender Peran, took place at Perranporth on the north Cornish coast from Wednesday 19th to Sunday 23rd October, and we were as delighted as ever to be participating.
Hevva ran a bilingual ceili on the Friday evening, incorporating a short display as a floor spot, and took part in the street dancing on the Saturday. In the street we were joined by Kekezza, and from South Wales Dawnswyr Gwerin Pen-y-Fai, all enjoying balmy October weather.
Next year's Lowender Peran will also be based at the Ponsmere Hotel in Perranporth, and you can keep up to date by visiting the festival web site at www.lowenderperan.co.uk.
'Mrs. Parkyn's Jig'
being danced by members
of at least three different groups!
Lowender Peran Warm Up Troyl
The organisers of Lowender Peran, Cornwall's Celtic festival, decided to hold a 'Warm Up Troyl' ahead of the main event. This took place at Perranporth on Saturday 1st October, and local groups were invited to perform a short floor spot each during the evening.
These spots were to comprise two or three dances, including one from another Celtic nation. We chose to include a welsh dance, which most of the group had only learned just two days beforehand!
Display at a wedding function, Penrose
There was a real cornish wedding at Penrose, near Wadebridge, on Saturday 24th September. The celebrations took place on the village Fair Field, complete with a traction engine to generate the power!
Hevva was there to give a display in the afternoon, which we did in one of the suitably decorated marquees. This was a very enjoyable occasion, and as can be seen from the photo, our dancers' gooks generated considerable interest with the bridesmaids!
Display at Fairholme Care Home, Camborne
We have performed several displays over the years at Fairholme Care Home in Camborne, and were pleased to be asked to do so again on 17th September. There is a continuing programme of entertainment for the residents here, and we are more than happy to play a part.

Charity Garden Party, Camborne
On Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August, we were at the Lowenac Hotel, Camborne, the venue for a Charity Garden Party in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care. Hevva were among the entertainers supporting this worthwhile cause with a display of dance and music in the very pleasant setting of the hotel grounds.

Wedding ceili, Bodmin
Playing outdoors for a wedding ceili is a risky proposition considering the vagaries of our Bank Holiday weather, but that's what we were asked to do on Sunday 28th August. The venue was a private house at Clerkenwater, near Bodmin, where a magnificent dance floor had been constructed on the lawn. As it turned out the evening proved a great success, with everyone enjoying the lovely garden setting.
Royal Cornwall Show

The Royal Cornwall Show hosts the Cornwall Festival of Dance, now in its ninth year, and we were pleased to be back taking part on Saturday 11th June - the sunniest day of the show. We shared the programme with a diverse range of dance genre, from jive to belly dancing to Polynesian, that's what this festival is all about!
Check our galleries page for more photos of Hevva at the show.

Wedding ceili, Falmouth
We have done quite a few gigs at the Falmouth Watersports Association Centre over the years, but Saturday 28th May saw us there to play for a wedding ceili for the first time. With the bride and groom admirably mastering a Cornish wedding dance to start the evening, the wedding party proved to be a keen and lively set of dancers, making for an enjoyable evening.
Daphne du Maurier Festival
A regular event on the Cornish calendar is the Daphne du Maurier Festival of Arts & Literature, held each year at Fowey. Hevva enjoyed a return visit on the last day of the festival, Saturday 21st May, to appear on the Town Quay stage. This was a two-hour music spot, with a few dances included. We thought that a progressively worsening drizzle towards the end had seen off our audience, but discovered that they had merely retreated to whatever shelter they could find and were continuing to support us from there - a big thank you to all those hardy souls!
Godolphin Food & Craft Fair
The National Trust organises a twice-yearly Spring and Autumn Food & Craft Fair at Godolphin House, and we are fortunate to have become regular participants at this beautiful venue.
Our most recent visit was on Monday 2nd May, rounding off a busy Bank Holiday weekend. This is an outdoor event, and a very real threat of rain was causing some apprehension, but in the end we found ourselves dancing unexpectedly in Spring sunshine, and very pleasant it was too!

King Edward Mine Museum Open Day

King Edward Mine Museum Open Day fell during a Bank Holiday Weekend this year, Sunday 1st May, and the weather was predictably bad! Our performance spots, originally destined to take place outside, were moved into the mill.
The changed location proved to be very satisfactory and we enjoyed playing and dancing for a surprisingly large audience who had braved the weather to attend this ever popular day.

St. Erth-Ploulec'h Twinning ceili
St. Erth is twinned with Ploulec'h in Brittany, and guests from the Breton village enjoyed a visit to their Cornish counterpart during April.
The Twinning Association arranged a ceili for the visitors and their hosts at Leedstown Village Hall on 30th April and Hevva was asked to play. This is something we have done before for the Association, and we were delighted to be asked to do so again.

Cornish Language Weekend
Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek (The Cornish Language Fellowship) organises an annual cornish language weekend - Pennseythen Gernewek - for Cornish speakers from beginners to fluent. This year the event was once again held at the Sandy Lodge Hotel, Newquay, over the weekend of 8th - 1oth April. Hevva performed a bilingual troyl on the Saturday evening, something we have enjoyed doing several times before, with a mix of display dances and called dances for all.

Day of Dance
The Cornish Dance Society organises an annual Day of Dance for its members, which provides a welcome opportunity for us all to get together in a social environment and share dances between groups. The most recent was held at Perranporth on march 26th, and almost every traditional dance group in Cornwall was represented.
Hevva was among the groups who displayed and taught a new dance, a ceili dance written by its dance leader Jenefer Lowe - as yet unnamed!
Ceili, Newquay

We had a terrific time at Newquay on Monday 21st March, performing a ceili for a visiting American high school choir, the Hood River Valley High Chamber Singers, who were in Cornwall to give concerts at Truro and Newquay.

St. Piran Play
The St. Piran Play, now organised by the St. Piran Trust, took place on Sunday 6th March at Perran Sands, with the usual large crowd of banner waving supporters following the proceedings through the dunes. A St. Piran exhibition was held in the café-bar at Perran Sands Holiday Park, where Hevva provided musical entertainment after the play.

German Folk Dance Group
Thursday 19th July
A German folk dance group, Steppin' Easy, will be visiting Cornwall in July, and Hevva is very much looking forward to meeting them for a social evening of German and Cornish dancing in Newquay during their stay. We have also been asked to run a couple of workshops for them while they are here.
